Haydn’s overture opens a program of major works by Schubert, Mozart and Strauss. Schubert’s Eighth Symphony, the Unfinished, with its immediately recognizable opening, has long been a favorite of audiences for its expansive melodies and high drama. Though, with only two movements, it leaves music lovers wondering what could have been. Mozart’s Symphony No. 33 is another audience favorite. Strauss’ introspective, Metamorphosen, sums up the program: completed the day after the destruction of the Vienna Opera House, pain is intertwined with hope and optimism, the essence of human existence.
