Musical Lines 2 »
In music, you can do exactly the same thing. Here's an example of a line of music that to me sounds very smooth and graceful. We use a special Italian word for a line of music that is smooth and connected. We call it legato. Listen and see if you think it's very smooth and graceful. This is just the very beginning of the melody that the cello plays in the "Swan," by the French composer Camille Saint-Saëns.

I hope you're hearing music right now. Unfortunately it doesn't sound like a real cello. That's because what you're hearing is being played by your computer using a special kind of computer file called a MIDI file. MIDI is the language computers and electronic musical instruments use to communicate with each other. MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface, but everyone just calls it MIDI. You can come and hear real instruments at our Family Discovery series. The real instruments will sound a whole lot better. |
